Exquisite ensemble with expressive innovation of Nordic folk music

Norwegian accordionist and composer Frode Haltli conjures up a unique musical landscape where Norway’s rich folk music traditions cross paths with modern compositional music, avant-garde and free jazz improvisations.

The masterful musician himself has dubbed his crossover project Avant Folk, which is a particularly apt term for a music where both folk music’s primordial sound and bold visions of the future resonate in the dynamic present of the compositions.

Haltli has received numerous awards, and the musical border crosser is at home at festivals for folk music, jazz and avant-garde. But it’s not just as a composer and musician that he impresses. He also has an amazing ability to bring together creative musicians from different backgrounds to fullfill his folk music experiments.

In his large Avant Folk ensemble, launched with the album Avant Folk in 2018, this ability creates wild and captivating sounds. Most recently, the ensemble has released the masterpiece Triptyk (2023), and the audience at Roskilde can look forward to meeting a team of Norway’s most exciting musicians who open new paths into folk music with violin, free jazz drums, goat horn, electric guitar and much more.
